Commonly known as the 'Dorset' button, the fabric-covered button first took shape in 1622 in Dorset, England. The earliest fabric-covered button styles were made from products from local sheep farms, including ram horns and sheep hides. By 1700, some of the most popular fabric-covered buttons were made from linen and wool yarns. By the end of the 18th century, handmade cloth buttons were replaced by machine-made styles. With the invention of the first threaded button machine in 1825, covered buttons in cotton styles entered the market. Today, fabric-covered buttons can be found in everything from silk to lace to jute.
