Can disposable medical masks be reused?
There are two kinds of medical masks: one is a three layer medical surgical mask, and the other is a five layer medical N95 mask.
Both masks are made of non-woven fabrics. The most important non-woven fabric is melt blown non-woven fabric in the middle layer. Melt blown non-woven fabric can block viruses and bacteria through the barrier effect of fibers and electrostatic adsorption of fibers.
If we use boiling, alcohol spraying or ultraviolet light to disinfect used masks, theoretically, we can eliminate bacteria and viruses stuck on the masks. However, high temperature boiling and alcohol spraying will damage the fibers of melt blown non-woven fabrics, so the function of the masks will be reduced.
The fiber barrier and electrostatic adsorption of melt blown non-woven fabric have a certain degree of saturation. When it reaches a certain degree, it will no longer have the function of absorbing pathogens. Therefore, surgical masks must be replaced when they are used for four hours.
