The bedding in your horse's stall serves several different purposes. It helps to cushion your horse against the firmer floor.
This is particularly important for horses who spend long periods in their stalls. Your horse is more likely to lie down on a
soft surface, and a proper layer of bedding can encourage your horse to get the rest that he needs. If bedding is inadequate,

Stall mats can also help to keep your bedding clean, so while you do go through bedding, you'll go through less. Horses can't dig down
into a stall base with mats in place, so there's no mixing of dirt or sand with the bedding. The bedding will stay light and clean, so you
can clean stalls faster while wasting less bedding.
