In 1923, the United Kingdom issued the first patent for the dyeing of chromic acid oxide film of aluminum with organic dyes. Due to the high porosity, strong adsorption capacity and easy dyeing characteristics of the anodized film, various dyeing methods have emerged. The dyeing method is to immerse the aluminum workpiece just after anodization in a solution containing dye immediately after cleaning, and the pores of the oxide film are dyed with various colors due to the adsorption of dye. Because this method has fast coloring, bright color and easy operation; after dyeing, the dye can be firmly attached to the membrane pores after sealing, which improves the anti-corrosion ability and anti-fouling ability of the membrane layer and can maintain a beautiful color. Therefore, the dyeing method has been rapidly developed and widely used.

The anodization of aluminum alloys for construction, decoration and protection is basically the formation of porous anodized films. Taking the sulfuric acid anodization of 6063 aluminum alloys for construction as an example, the porosity is roughly 11%. The structure of this porous anodic oxide film is composed of a barrier layer and a porous layer that are close to the metal substrate. Although this porous characteristic endows the anodic oxide film with the ability to color and other functions, the corrosion resistance, weather resistance, pollution resistance, etc. cannot meet the requirements of use. Therefore, considering the practical application, the micropores of the aluminum anodic oxide film must be closed. The unsealed anodic oxide film increases the effective surface area of the workpiece or sample exposed to the environment by dozens to hundreds of times due to the large number of microporous areas, and the corresponding corrosion rate is also greatly increased. Therefore, the anodic oxide film of aluminum must be sealed to improve corrosion resistance and pollution resistance, except for individual hard oxide films such as wear-resistant films.
