Hydraulic motors are similar in design to hydraulic pumps, but motors work the opposite way around, converting hydraulic energy into mechanical energy through the principle of a rotating shaft. The torque and rotation are generated by hydraulic pressure and flow, determining how much power the hydraulic motor produces. The similarity in the design of motors and pumps means some hydraulic pumps with fixed displacement volumes are used as motors in specific applications.
Many applications use hydraulic motors including winches, excavators, crane drives, roll mills, self-driven cranes, mixer and agitator drives and more. The motor chosen for each application must be appropriate for the hydraulic system's specific requirements, with factors such as speed, load, serviceability and range of load taken into consideration.
The pressure and flow equate to power in the hydraulic motor, while the pressure drop and displacement determine its torque. Subsequently, the motor's power output is proportional to its speed. There's a whole range of speeds available: from low speed models with a minimum speed of 0.5 rpm, to high speed options of up to 10,000 rpm. A low speed motor can generate large torques at lower speeds.
