Working Principle of AC Motor
The basic working principle of AC Motors mainly depends on magnetism. A basic AC Motor consists of a coil and two permanent magnets located near the shaft. Once alternating current is supplied to the coil, it turns into an electromagnet that produces a magnetic field. AC Motor include two basic components: a stator and a rotor. The stator includes wire rings, solid metal shafts, freely movable conductive metal parts, coils, squirrel cages, etc.
In the stator of an AC Motor, power can be transmitted to an external coil, forming a stationary part like the stator. Coils can be activated in pairs, in series, to produce a magnetic field that roughly rotates the outside of an AC Motor.
According to the laws of electromagnetism, the rotor remains balanced in a changing magnetic field. The magnetic field can produce an electric current in the rotor.
If the conductor used here is a wire or a ring, then the current will form a loop around it, or if the conductor is just a solid piece of metal, then eddy currents will flow around it. Induced current can produce a collision field, and according to another electric collision law, a rotating magnetic field will also rotate. Once the magnets interact, the coils of wire and shaft will begin to turn the motor.
Types of AC Motor
AC Motors are divided into two types: synchronous motors and induction motors. Please see the following introduction for detailed categories.
The main function of a synchronous motor is to convert AC electrical energy into mechanical energy. As the name suggests, this type of motor simply operates at synchronous speed.
The working principle of the synchronous motor is that as long as the synchronous motor is powered, a rotating magnetic field can be formed. The field attempted to drag the rotor across it, although it was unable to do so due to the inactivity of the rotor. Therefore starting torque cannot be produced, so basically this is not a self-starting motor.
Induction motors, also known as asynchronous motors, convert alternating current into mechanical energy through electromagnetic induction. This type of motor is simply divided into two types: single-phase and three-phase
The principle of operation of an induction motor is that the electric windings in the motor work in the same way as electric and sulfur field windings. The connection of the stator windings can be done through AC power, then magnetic flux can be generated in the air gap. Here, the flux will rotate at a set speed, the synchronous speed. Therefore, a voltage can be induced by the rotating magnetic flux within the stator and turned windings.
Additionally, if the rotor's electrical circuit is closed, the current throughout the rotor windings responds by rotating magnetic flux to produce torque. In steady state, the rotor rotates at a speed very close to the step speed. Likewise, there are two types of induction motors such as single phase induction motor and three phase induction motor.
Typically, the structure of a single-phase Induction Motor is similar to that of a three-phase motor. The arrangement of the AC windings can be done on the stationary part like the stator, while the short-circuit conductors are arranged in the rotating part like the stator. The main difference between the two is that only single phase power is supplied to the stator.
If you consider the motor diagram, AC power is supplied to the fixed winding, then a pulsating flux density will be generated which will connect the rotor circuit. In the rotor circuit, the induced voltage will cause a current to be supplied, thereby creating a magnetic flux density to resist changes within the stator flux connected to the circuit.
In the motor, the magnetic flux density of both the static part and the rotating part will run in the y direction. This simple qualitative analysis illustrates a problem. The single-phase power supply will produce a pulsating field instead of a rotating field, because the pulsating field does not Produce torque.
Three-phase Induction mMotors are widely used to generate mechanical energy in industrial applications. In the industrial field, most of the motors used are three-phase induction motors. So compared to other motors, this motor is the most important type.
It is an AC motor which works on three phase power like single phase induction motor is evaluated where single phase power is required to activate it. The three-phase power supply will generate an electromagnetic field in the stator winding, thereby generating a rotation including a magnetic field in the motor rotor winding.
