If you've never even heard of the term 'chenille yarn' before, then it may make more sense to think of it as velvet yarn. Although the production process for chenille yarns and velvet fabric are slightly different, when it comes to yarn they're essentially the same. You have many short lengths of yarn (called the pile) held between two core lengths of yarn that are twisted together - this method may differ slightly from yarn to yarn, but the end result is the same - a super fluffy squishy yarn that feels like a fluffy caterpillar... in fact that is where the word chenille comes from - it's French for caterpillar!
Chenille yarns have become increasingly popular in recent years, especially as they tend to be on the chunky side which makes them great for super-soft blankets. Developments in the production process means that whereas Chenille yarns of old used to easily shed their fluffy fibres, nowadays they're pretty sturdy and consistent!
