Purpose
The use of copper is much wider than pure iron. Every year, 50% of copper is electrolyzed to pure copper for use in the electrical industry. The copper mentioned here must be very pure. It contains more than 99.95% copper. A very small amount of impurities, especially phosphorus, arsenic and aluminium, will greatly reduce the conductivity of copper. It is mainly used to make electrical equipment such as generators, buses, cables, switchgear, transformers, heat exchangers, pipes, flat-plate collectors of solar heating devices and other heat conducting devices. Oxygen content in copper (which is easy to mix with a small amount of oxygen in copper smelting) has a great influence on conductivity. Copper used in electrical industry must be oxygen-free copper. In addition, impurities such as lead, antimony and bismuth can not bind the crystals of copper together, resulting in hot brittleness and affecting the processing of pure copper. This kind of pure copper with high purity is usually refined by electrolysis: Impure Copper (i.e. crude copper) is used as anode, pure copper as cathode, and copper sulfate solution as electrolyte. When the current passes through, the Impure Copper on the anode melts gradually, and the pure copper deposits gradually on the cathode. The purity of copper obtained by this refinement can reach 99.99%.
Copper is also used in short circuit rings of motors, electromagnetic heating inductors, and high-power electronic components, wiring terminals and so on.
