What is copper-nickel used for?

Copper nickel is most commonly used in applications such as electrical and electronic products, tubes for condensers in ships and power plants, various marine products, including valves, pumps, fittings, and sheathing for ship hulls.

What is the difference between copper and copper-nickel?

The key difference between copper and nickel is that the copper has a red-orange metallic lustre whereas the nickel is lustrous and silver with a gold tinge.

Both copper and nickel locates in the period 4 of the periodic table of chemical elements. Thus, they are neighbouring elements.

Why is copper-nickel corrosion resistant?

A large reason for copper-nickel's corrosion resistance stems from the alloy's ability to form a complex surface film in response to the presence of seawater.

The surface film protects the metal below, and gives the alloy a corrosion rate in seawater that is between 0.025 and 0.0025 mm/yr.
