Because it is very thin, it will not interfere with light, so the surface of titanium is usually not colorful. It can only be silver-gray. But if the titanium is properly treated, an oxide film with a thickness of several hundred angstroms will be added to the surface of the titanium to form a colored titanium alloy.
Titanium and titanium alloys undergo surface anodic oxidation treatment, and an oxide film with a thickness of several hundred nanometers to several thousand nanometers can be formed on the surface. The main component of the oxide film is titanium oxide. Because the film-like substance composed of this component is transparent, it can strongly reflect and refract light.
The color gradation of colored titanium depends on the thickness of the film and the principle of light dryness. The interference between the reflected light on the surface of the oxide film and the light reflected on the interface between the transparent oxide film and the metal forms various colors. This interference color changes with the thickness of the film, and presents different colors as the thickness of the film increases. It can present various colors such as blue, golden yellow, purple red, peacock blue, green, and gray in turn.
