Stainless steel UNS S24100 (Nitronic 32, XM-28) for automotive hose clamps, springs, wires etc
1 PRODUCT
Stainless steel UNS S24100 (Nitronic 32, XM-28) for automotive hose clamps, springs, wires etc.
Product available in forms of bar, rod, wire, spring, forging billets, sheet, strip, foil, extrusions, seamless tubing etc.
2 APPLICATION
Clamps for pole line hardware, concrete reinforcing accessories, abrasion and corrosion resistant screens, high strength non-magnetic springs, wire forms, racks, cages, etc.
3 OVERVIEW
Nitronic 32 is an austenitic stainless steel that has almost twice the yield strength of 304 and comparable corrosion resistance. The alloy has high work hardenability which leads cold working to high strengths while maintaining good ductility.

8 WORKING INSTRUCTION
Forging
Heat to 2000°F, soak to equalize, then heat to 2150°F and equalize prior to forging.
Annealing
Soak at 1900-2050°F, quench quickly in air or water.
Hardening
Hardening this alloy requires cold working. It will not harden with exposure to thermal treatment.
Machinability
Slow speeds, positive feeds and abundant resulphurized lubricant are essential to success in machining this alloy. Speeds and feeds similar to those employed with 316 or 317 stainless are appropriate here. All common machining practices can be used on this material. Chips will be tough and stringy and it is recommended that curlers or breakers are used.
Forming
Pre-heating is not required with this material and all common welding methods including gas tungsten arc, gas metal arc and submerged arc are acceptable. Filler metal selection should be of similar chemistry for maximum strength and resistance to intergranular attack.
Weldability
Early experience with NITRONIC 32 stainless shows good welding characteristics. It can be fusion welded with the usual arc welding processes employed for austenitic stainless steels. NITRONIC 32 provides superior ductility and toughness, as well as resistance to weld cracking without the need for preheating or post heating, as most martensitic and heavy gage ferritic stainless steels require.
