Greaseproof paper is a type of paper that is impermeable to oil and grease, making it ideal for food packaging and cooking applications. The density is further increased through a process known as hard calendering (or super calendering), resulting in a product often referred to as cellophane. Cellophane is created by filling the pores with starch, alginate, or carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) during a pulp press process, or by chemically treating the paper to enhance its oil resistance. The basis weight of greaseproof paper generally ranges from 30 to 90 g/m².
