Brown corundum is made from high-quality bauxite as raw material and blended with anthracite and iron filings. Processed through an arc smelting process that brings the temperature up to 2000°C or higher, the result is a dense and hard texture. It is then further crushed and plasticized via a self-grinding machine, magnetically selected to remove any iron particles, and sieved into various sizes.
The versatility of this material allows for it to be used in a variety of applications. It makes for excellent ceramic production, high-resistance abrasive resin and grinding, precision casting, sandblasting and polishing. It even has a high-grade refractory application. Its spherical pellets, produced with the process outlined above, make for an ideal end product.
Under a certain pressure, Brown corundum can quickly impact the surface of the object with a large number of sharp edges. This makes it a very fast spray grinding method because the acceleration and velocity of particles in the air flow are a function of inertance and particle size. The smaller the particle, the easier it is to accelerate, thus resulting in a higher impact force on the surface of the object.
Brown corundum is highly valued by many for abrasive applications due to its high Mohs hardness, exceptional wear resistance, and quality surface finish. The melting point of aluminum oxide is 2045°C (3723°F) and its boiling point is ~2980°C (5400°F). Its density is 3.9 g/cm³ and its refractive index is 1.76.
Furthermore, the specific heat capacity of aluminum oxide is 0.88 J/gK and its thermal conductivity is 30.0-35.0 W/mK at room temperature. On the Mohs hardness scale of abrasives, it has a hardness rating of 9. Aluminum oxide has a bulk density of 1.57-1.65 g/cm³ and its grain shape is regular and sharp-edged. It is non-magnetic and has a crystal structure that is trigonal hexagonal.
