Livestock Waste Biogas Project
A 1,000-pound cow produces an average of 80 pounds of manure per day. This fertilizer is usually stored in storage tanks before being applied to the field. Not only does manure produce methane as it decomposes, it can also lead to a nutrient excess in waterways. When livestock manure is used to produce biogas, anaerobic digestion can reduce greenhouse gas emissions, reduce odors and reduce fecal pathogens by up to 99%.
Biogas is a useful renewable energy source that is often piped, stored and burned to generate heat (for steam) or electricity. For larger units, it can be cleaned (scrubbed) and used as fuel for transport or heating. Digestive waste from biogas production has a high nutritional content. It can be used as fertilizer - as long as it doesn't contain pathogens or toxins - or as compost.

The benefits of biogas
Stored biogas can replace coal or natural gas to provide a clean, renewable and reliable source of baseload electricity. Baseload power is continuously generated to meet minimum power demands; renewable baseload power can supplement more intermittent renewable energy. Similar to natural gas, biogas can also be used as a source that can rapidly increase peak power. Using stored biogas can limit the amount of methane released into the atmosphere and reduce reliance on fossil fuels. The reduction in methane emissions from the utilization of all potential biogas in the United States would be equivalent to the emissions of 800,000 to 11 million passenger cars per year. Compressed natural gas from biogas can reduce greenhouse gas emissions by up to 91 percent relative to petroleum gasoline, according to a waste-to-wheels assessment.
