Porcelain fused metal crowns (or PFM crowns) can be referred to as all-cast crowns, which have porcelain fused to most or all of the tooth. They are a mix of porcelain and metal crowns. There is a layer of metal underneath the entire crown with china/ceramic on top. The metal frame is thin and strong, ideal for prepared teeth. It is a combination of different types of alloys that are designed so that they work well with porcelain. Metal alloys with high melting temperatures are used to fuse the porcelain to the surface and prevent the metal from melting. This ensures that the porcelain will bond without changing its color.
