What Does Ozone Do?
Ozone in the high atmosphere protects us from excess ultraviolet rays of the sun. You are probably familiar with the “ozone hole” caused by artificial aerosol spray propellants in the 1970s and 80s.
Ozone in the air is a powerful oxidant. It is an inorganic molecule of three oxygen atoms. It is very reactive. It has a very distinctive sharp odour similar to chlorine bleach.
Low concentrations of ozone in the air destroy materials such as bacteria and odour-causing organics. Ozone rapidly reverts back to oxygen, so it rips apart organic materials like smoke or odour in an oxidation reaction. The third oxygen atom of ozone attaches itself to other molecules.
The chemical structure changes to less offensive compounds. Excess ozone reacts until it is fully broken down into oxygen. Heat and sunlight hasten the reaction. Unlike other types of oxidizers (like chlorine bleach or ammonia) there isn’t a harmful chemical residue.
