Carbide segregation is prone to occur in smelting high-speed steel. Hard and brittle carbides are unevenly distributed in high-speed steel, and the grains are coarse (8-20μm), which will adversely affect the wear resistance, toughness and cutting performance of high-speed steel tools. .
Powder metallurgy high-speed steel is a new type of tool material developed in the 1970s. It is a small and uniform crystalline structure (high-speed steel powder) obtained by atomizing the molten steel from a high-frequency induction furnace with high-pressure argon or pure nitrogen. The powder is then made into a tool blank under high temperature and high pressure, or a billet can be made first, and then forged and rolled into a tool. [1]
Powder metallurgy high-speed steel changes the traditional melting and casting process, and adopts high-performance high-speed steel or direct forming tool material produced by powder metallurgy technology. The composition can be close to that of general high-speed steel. The technological process includes atomization powder milling, powder vacuum deoxidation, blank making and firing. Atomization pulverization relies on high-speed inert gas or high-pressure water to impact the molten steel stream, which is then atomized into fine droplets and solidified into powder. The powder is deoxidized and sintered at high temperature to form a material or a tool. The microstructure is characterized by the absence of segregation of chemical components, and the carbide particles are very fine and evenly distributed, which significantly improves the toughness, thereby allowing to increase the volume fraction of carbides and improve wear resistance. The heat treatment temperature range is wide, and it can be heated at very high temperatures without overheating. Heat treatment deformation is small, forging, rolling and grinding properties are improved, and it is often used to produce high-speed steel with high vanadium and niobium content that is difficult to manufacture by conventional methods. Wear-resistant superhard micropowder can also be added to the powder to obtain a high-performance special high-speed steel between high-speed steel and cemented carbide.
