What is a brushless AC generator?
A generator regulates it's output voltage by varying the strength of the magnetic field of the rotor (rotating part) which is made by an electromagnet (coil). Typically this is powered by brushes and slip rings however in a brushless AC generator the slip rings are replaced with a stator winding, another rotor winding and a bridge rectifier on the rotor. The operation of the two windings are similar to that of a transformer. The stator winding is powered with AC (varying strength to regulate generator output) which induces a current on the rotor winding. The output of the rotor winding is rectified and used to power the other stator winding that generates the steady magnetic field for the generator.
