What does the armature do in a starter motor?
The moving or turning coil is the starter motor armature. It only becomes a magnet when the motor receives an electric current. The armature assembly, being the moving part, provides the force to spin the motor's shaft. This constitutes the motor rotation that does useful work to start the engine.
How do I know if my armature is bad?
Checking the amp draw of your starter is another simple method to test for a bad armature. The specifications may vary from vehicle to vehicle so you will need to check your car manual for the normal amp draw range. If the amp draw is overly high, that is a sign of a bad armature.
