The starter solenoid is a relay that connects the terminal for the battery and starter when it receives power from the ignition switch, temporarily powering the starter until you release the key. Starter solenoids may wear out with age, and may not make a complete connection or may fail to separate when the key is released. Depending on your Mustang's year, the starter solenoid may be a separate component, or it might be built into the starter. If your Mustang makes no sound at all when you turn the key, if you hear one click and then nothing more, or if the starter motor stays engaged when you release the key, the starter solenoid should be inspected and replaced if needed.
